Hibiscus on Hawaii

I've been away to Maui and Kauai for 10 days, and came back with loads of pictures to post.
I just adore the native Hawaiian white hibiscus, kokio kea, kokio keokeo. Unfortunately, I was not able to purchase a cutting, I don't know why in the duty free shop they had only the (easily assessible from outside Hawaii) red and yellow cuttings.

These yellow ones in Hana are so pretty. What surprised me was how floriferous the plants are, even more so than in the Caribbean

Look at the intensity of that orange!

What also surpised me was the fact that the flower colors were in general more intense than in the Caribbean, even of the common red variety. I think it's because of the soil and the less intense sun.

This tiny 2 inch hibiscus was just adorable, like a little carnation

I noticed these two varieties were used practically like a vining shrub

Lovely against the sky

Just stunning

Hi Miss Nicole,
Your pictures are lovely. Are you using your new Nikon? You seem to live such a glam life traveling so much. What do you do?
We have elections on Monday so you know the story. Drama and chaos in Trinidad! The traffic was unreal today. That's why we need our gardens. :)
We launched the 2008 Garden Club calendar on Sunday and I thin it's even nicer than last year.

What fun, Nicole - not just a teaser, but total immersion in Hibiscus! Too bad you couldn't bring back the white one you wanted.

I bought a piece of white ginger in Hawaii, sold at the airport with proof of inspection so we could take them on the plane. It's now several clumps of plants. Did you find something else fun to buy?

The Hibiscus are beautiful ... I love all the colours. The white ones look so delicate with wonderfully-coloured centres. Lucky you!!

Sharon, I got the new Nikon just a couple days before I left for my trip, so didn’t have time to learn to use it yet. I took these with my Sony DSC-T7, you cant beat that for portability!
As for a living, I am a travel writer for upscale clients. Just kidding, that’s the fantasy! LOL. Actually I am a lawyer in international development-helping countries prepare new laws and policies, training etc. But this trip to Hawaii was a vacation.
Yes, I have been hearing of all the elections bacchanal. I saw your post on the garden club, Ruth is a friend of my close friend here, Fiona Curtis (nee Hope-Ross) Ruth promised to send us the 2008 Garden Club calendar!

Thanks, Pam, yes, two lovely islands. We really liked how they are so clean and organized.

Thanks, Annie
I also saw the white ginger at the airport, but they have that selling in the garden center here. I did get cuttings of red plumeria and the blue ginger. I will set them out tomorrow. They also had the tree fern (a big wrapped root or rhizome) but I didn’t have room in my carry-on for that!
How lovely you have those clumps of white ginger as a permanent reminder of your trip.

Kate, I also love the delicacy of the white ones. I read while there that it’s also becoming more popular there, as people are once again turning to the native plants. I had been looking forward to that trip for months, and feel rather refreshed, now.
