Blooms day November 08

with the hurricane exactly one month ago I thought I'd not be able to do a post for http://maydreamsgardens.blogspot.com/ venerable Blooms Day this month. But while the garden is not awash with blooms a surprising number of plants have put out a few. Like 3 of my aloe maculata, what a rewarding plant, requiring almost no care.

my lovely Diablotin rose. This is one of the first plants I checked to see whether it survived the hurricane. well, what do you expect of the Devil?

dramatic orange sparks from the Mexican honeysuckle. I am eyeing the red one in the garden centre

euphorbia mulli-365 days a year in bloom

soft salmon pink oleander

purple allamanda

Kalanchoe. I actually like the architectural leaves of this particular type even more than the blooms

pillowy puff of tree morning glory

some sort of cassia (I grew from seed from a tree in one of the hotels)

who's been eating my flowers?
this little caterpillar is the exact yellow of the bloom!

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful flowers this month, Nicole. It was just what this color-starved northern gardener needed! Even your caterpillar was pretty.

wonderful collection of blooms -

Many of the blooms look so vibrant! The close up of the aloes look spectacular!

Nicole the caterpillar is the larva of the sulphur butterfly. Their host plant is cassias. Don't worry the cassias can take the licks. The caterpillar will become yellow when feeding on the flowers as a sort of disguise to ward off predators.

What an array of lovely blooms. We have the yellow Kalanchoe in common. I love the Aloe bloom. The caterpillar shot is great too.
Best Wishes

The kalanchoe is remarkable and I have never seen a yellow caterpillar!

Beautiful photos! And the caterpillar is fascinating. That it takes on the color of it's host is amazing! Jan

The blooms in your blog are beautiful. In the suburban area where I live the various districts are named after flowers. I'm in the district named after the Cassia flower.

Cheers

You've got to love the tropics! Great blooms!

That cassia is a super color!

That is just wonderful! It is encouraging to look at beautiful tropical flowers when it is cold and dull over here. Thank you.

My cassia is about 8" tall, Nicole - guess I'll have to wait awhile to get that beautiful flower and intriguing caterpillar. In this GardenWeb thread there's a link to a similar very yellow caterpillar, identified as the larva of a Cloudless Sulpher butterfly.

Happy GBBD, a little late. Yours was lovely!

Thanks, Pam, the yellow caterpillar IS so cute

My pleasure, Nan. And your blog is always such a visual treat.

Thanks, Ewa, I went and bought another ephorbia milli this week. There were 3 nice types but I could have only afforded one. They are quite expensive plants

Kanak, I can’t tell you how happy I am I accepted those aloe plants two years ago.

Thanks, islandgal246 I will try to grow another cassia for the caterpillars. Sometimes the garden literally erupts in sulfur butterflies!

Thanks, Green thumb , I really enjoyed your blooms

Rusty, thankfully the hurricane came from the west and the most delicate part of the garden is on the east of the house. I was very luckt, I lost only a few plants and we had zero damge otherwise..

Thanks, Katarina

chuck –that kalanchoe is another one of my favourite purchases, as after each bloom it multiplies and I get to share with friends.

thanks, Tina, Thanks For 2 Day, PATERIKA and good luck with your plants, Emma

Layanee, Matron, believe me, I spent the first twenty five years of my life never knowing that winter meant death for plants.

Annie-what kind of cassia do you have? I bought some seeds of javanica and others online but the plants died soon after germination. Thanks for the link.
